Rooted in green
In April 2024, I had the privilege of joining WAUW Workshops for an inspiring day in Kortrijk, Belgium, as part of the Floraliën side event. Normally held in Gent, Floraliën extended its reach to Kortrijk in 2024, and with it came “Jong Tuin Labo” — a vibrant gathering of young people, blooming ideas, and hands-on workshops.
At the Buda Fabriek on Buda Island, we came together with Floraliën, WAUW Workshops, and Ministerie van Natuur to cultivate a space where nature, art, and community could flourish. Through a series of engaging activities, we invited children and young adults to explore the beauty of flowers and plants, learn about sustainable horticulture, and experience the soothing benefits of green environments.
The day was alive with creativity and connection. Teachers and students discovered how the natural world can inspire both well-being and artistry. Young hands arranged blooms into stunning floral designs, explored the healing power of gardening, and connected with the heritage of Flanders’ rich horticultural landscape.
Jong Tuin Labo wasn’t just about workshops—it was about creating ripples. We sought to spark curiosity in schools and communities, fostering awareness about the importance of green spaces. It was about showing how sustainable gardening practices can bring people together, inspire resilience, and nurture joy.
I’m grateful to have been part of such a thoughtful and dynamic initiative. If you’re ever near Kortrijk or Gent, I hope you’ll find time to connect with the Floraliën events and the wonderful partners who made Jong Tuin Labo such a success.
