Description
This playbook aims to take you step by step to design, implement, and reflect on an initiative of your own related to the energy transition.

Background
This playbook is the outcome of helping citizens develop their own community energy initiatives. The approaches used in the playbook are based on an online programme, called the ENCLUDE Academy, developed as a part of the research project ENCLUDE, as well as methods that have been used with more than 1,500 Bachelor and Masters students in Europe.

Design
The playbook is designed to guide changemakers through the process of creating impactful energy initiatives. It combines theoretical insights with practical strategies to empower individuals and communities to take proactive steps toward sustainable energy solutions.

“A big thanks to Agata Smok for helping us to communicate ideas that are not always easy to communicate. Designing in complexity is about the heart as much as it is about the head. Great visuals help us to bridge the divide.”

How did we design the ENCLUDE Academy Playbook?

The ENCLUDE Academy Playbook is designed to offer three flexible reading experiences.

First, you can approach it in a traditional, linear way—reading it cover to cover like a novel. This method provides a comprehensive understanding of the design thinking process tailored to Energy Projects.

Second, the Playbook is also perfect for those who prefer a more fragmented reading style, jumping straight into real-life stories and practical insights. This makes it an ideal companion during meetings and workshops, where case studies from ENCLUDE Academy interviews can serve as conversation starters or inspiration for problem-solving.

Third, it’s tailored for readers who are focused on specific stages of the design thinking process. Whether you've already covered earlier sections or are preparing for upcoming phases, you can dive directly into the relevant parts that interest you most. This makes it a dynamic tool for ongoing learning and application.

To make navigation simple, we incorporated a color-coded system. Each stage of the design process is assigned its own color, which is visible on the book’s fore edge—allowing you to easily jump to the section that resonates with your current needs.

The illustration you see here is an initial sketch I created to communicate the foundational principles of the Playbook’s structure to ENCLUDE team of authors. We collaborated closely throughout the entire process to achieve the functional and visually engaging result you now may have in your hands.

“Special shoutout to our talented graphic designer, Agata Smok. The playbook wouldn't be as playful as it is without her work and creativity.”
